Acne Vulgaris

Acne Vulgaris is more commonly known as either acne or pimples.  It is a very common skin disorder that can affect over 85% of people at some time in their lives.  It can affect people at any age form baby to adult but is most common in teenagers when Hormone changes are at their highest.  Alterations to the skin especially the hair follicles and the associated sebaceous glands cause inflammation of the skin. Pimples, zits and spots are the familiar names that identify Acne Vulgaris.

The sebaceous glands, that are located just beneath the skin, can overproduce oil and this can clog your skins pores, this provides a breeding environment for skin bacteria to multiply.  As the oil and bacteria collect under the skin it becomes inflamed and creates visible pimples on the skin.  The areas of the body that can be affected by acne are the face, back, chest, shoulders and upper arms.

In severe case of acne visible scars can be left, but it’s the emotional scars that can cause the most damage.  Depression and low self-esteem have been linked to sufferers of severe acne and in some cases suicide.  Acne is more prominent in western society and is usually linked to adolescents.

In the most usual cases acne you will find that the appearance of spots lessens or disappears completely by the time you hit your twenties.  Unfortunately though, there is no strict time frame for acne vulgaris to vanish altogether, and in some extreme cases sufferers can still have symptoms well into their thirties and forties and sometimes even longer.

It is unknown as to why some people get acne and others do not.  It is partly due to genes, if your parents suffered from acne the chances are that you will too.  Diet, stress and active hormones (menstrual cycles, puberty and menopause) are known to influence the onset of acne.  Other factors include the use of Anabolic steroids.

Treatment of acne can vary from individuals.  A dermatologist can best help you make sure that the treatment you use to help cure your acne is right for you.  IN all cases of acne it is best to treat the symptoms early to avoid the unnecessary pain and grief that scarring and prolonged outbreaks can cause.
