Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne is considered by most dermatologists as the worst and most severe form of acne.  Cystic Acne is most common in teenagers and mainly affects the face area.  Easily diagnosed by the formation of small abscesses on the facial area cystic acne is caused when the oil ducts of the skin become clogged and infected.  Cystic acne often affects the deeper skin tissue and outbreaks are very painful and can result in heavy scarring.

This severe form of acne takes much longer to heal as the infection is rooted deeper under the skin.  Treatment for cystic acne is a strong oral medication and it is recommended that sufferers need to see a dermatologist for assistance.  There are however, several preventative measures that can be taken in order to reduce the risk of developing cystic acne.

Although a simple and obvious solution, gentle cleansing of the facial area is often overlooked.  Many acne patients are advised to wash and cleanse their face at least twice a day.  This reduces the amount of oil and grease that collects on the skin during normal day to day activities.  Another simple preventative measure is to try and consciously keep your hands and fingers away from the face.  Many bacteria and germs can be transferred to the skin via the fingers and hands and this can irritate and infect existing acne resulting in cystic acne.

With regards to the most commonly prescribed drugs for cystic acne the first is Isotretinion.  This drug is taken in pill form and helps to treat the inflammation, excess oil production and clogged skin pores.  Another common prescribed medicine is for female sufferers of cystic acne.  It is thought that oral contraceptives help to suppress overactive sebaceous glands (the glands that produce oil).  As well as the oral contraceptive physicians also recommend a synthetic steroid to slow down other hormones which have tendencies to boost this oil producing gland.

What ever way you look at it, you will need to visit a dermatologist who will help you to find the best cure for your cystic acne.  Holistic and natural remedies are available but few and far between.
